Training Standards

"We maintain that the strength of the Girl Scout movement rests in the voluntary leadership of its adult members and that the ultimate responsibility for the Girl Scout movement rests with volunteers."

Preamble to the Constitution & Bylaws, Girl Scouts of the USA

Michigan Trails expresses its commitment to adult education for all members through its adult development program, so that all girls experiencing Girls Scouting will be able to develop values, contribute to society, develop self-potential and relate to others.

Every leader is required to receive Leader's Introduction and sign a Leader Agreement form. Within 90 days of signing the agreement, she/he must attend Basic Orientation Training and Age Level Training. Troop leaders must also successfully complete an approved first aid and CPR course within six months of appointment. If a troop is going camping, an adult working with that troop must complete Indoor Camping and Troop Camping prior to the camping experience. Training must be renewed as required.

"Each troop or group should have at least one adult leader and one or more assistant leaders. Because the female role model is essential to fulfilling the purpose of Girl Scouting, at least one member of the leadership team must be an adult female. Leaders should have training as specified by the council. In addition, an active troop committee of registered adult members should provide ongoing support to the troop."

Safety-Wise, Standard 13

"Activities carried out in outdoor settings are an important part of Girl Scout program for each age level. The leader should receive the appropriate training from her council to help her guide preparation for and implementation of the outdoor activities."

Safety-Wise, Standard 7
