FAQs

Who should attend Girl Scout Leader Training courses?

Girl Scouts of Michigan Trails requires all adult leaders, co-leaders, and advisors to attend New Leader Introduction, Basic Orientation Training and appropriate age-level training within 90 days of their appointment as Girl Scout Leaders.

Who teaches the courses?

Volunteer Girl Scout Trainers with specialized skills and experience offer most of the courses listed in the calendar. Some specialized classes may be taught by consultants or experts in a particular field.

What is the cost?

The $3 registration fee must accompany registration forms. However, the $3 registration fee will be returned to those that attend, in the form of a Training Ticket, worth $3. The Training Ticket has the same value as money, and can be used towards any council registration or items purchased from the Shop. Opportunity Funds are available for training fees.

Do I need to register for the class?

YES! Registration is required. Training registration forms must be filled out completely and returned to the Service Center by the registration deadline, one week prior to course delivery. Class size is limited and we encourage early registration. All training plans and materials will be tailored to the number of registered volunteers. Courses with low registrations may be canceled. After your registration has been received at the Service Center, you will receive a postcard confirming your attendance with the date, place and time.

What if I can't attend after I have registered?

Please be sure to inform the Service Center as early as possible if you can not attend a course for which you are registered, so your space can be offered to another volunteer. Refunds will be in the form of a Training Ticket.

How do I apply for a refund?

Written requests for fee refunds for training must be made prior to the event. If you fail to cancel a registration for a course requiring a fee, the fee will not be returned or credited. Refund requests due to illness must be made in writing as soon as possible after the training.

Are classes ever canceled?

Circumstances occasionally require cancellation of a course. If this occurs, the Service Center will inform you by telephone at the numbers indicated on your registration form. In the case of severe weather, check for messages, or call the Service Center at (616) 784-3341 or 1-800-442-1401. If schools in the area of a class are closed due to weather, Girl Scout training is automatically canceled. Be aware that schools in your area may be closed, while schools in the area of the training may be on schedule.

What if I arrive late or depart early?

In order to have a successful training, it is important to be at the training on time. Excessive lateness or early departures could result in not receiving credit for the training.

What should I bring to class?

Don't forget to bring your Safety-Wise, Volunteer Resource Book, Age Level Leader Handbook, training card, pen and paper. If you are attending an all-day training, bring a sack lunch.
